Toyota Rav4 towing Capacity

If the Toyota Rav4 is a model you’ve been considering, you’re probably in the market for a small crossover that’s spacious, fuel-efficient, and loaded with great features. Once those considerations are out of the way – and the Rav4 certainly fits the bill on all counts – it’s time to make some further inquiries. For example, what’s the 2016 Toyota Rav4 towing capacity?

If you’re looking to find out whether the 2016 Rav4 can tow your trailer, we’ve got the details on the towing capacity for this crossover as well as some other helpful information on the Rav4’s capability.

2016 Rav4 Towing Capacity

First thing’s first: The towing capacity for the 2016 Toyota Rav4 is 1,500 lbs. That weight rating is for the trailer itself as well as any cargo you’ve got stored inside (we assume that’s why you’d want the trailer in the first place). There’s also something called a maximum tongue weight, and that number represents that weight that rests on the ball once you’ve got the trailer hitched. The max tongue weight for the 2016 Toyota Rav4 is 150 lbs.

Now, maybe you’re looking to just haul some things in the back of your Rav4 in addition to or in place of doing any towing. That’s where the cargo capacity and payload come in. The 2016 Toyota Rav4 has a payload of 900 lbs. and a maximum cargo capacity of up to 73.4 cubic feet with the second row of seating folded down. Should you decide to keep the second row up for passengers, you’ve got 38.4 cubic feet at your disposal instead.

Does the 1500 pounds of towing capability mean bumper towing capacity or with a tow hitch attached?

    • Admin says:

      Hi Robn!

It’s recommended that you get a hitch installed before towing, especially if you’re planning on towing frequently or up toward that upper 1500 limit. Get in touch with your local service center (or ours if you’re in the area!) to find out more about ordering a hitch and having it installed.

My wife would like to occasionally haul (inside the cargo area) approximately 300 lbs. As regards engine life; will this added weight be safe and will it shorten the life of the 4 cyl engine due to engine drag?

    Thank you!

    • Admin says:

      Hello YB,

Your wife’s exact model should have a sticker inside the door with its weight limit — Most Rav4 models are in the neighborhood of 850 pounds, but you’ll definitely want to check. As long as this hauling is occasional and you do your best to distribute the weight as much as possible, it’s unlikely that you’ll suffer long-term side effects in terms of engine life. As far as fuel economy goes, those particular trips might not yield the same fuel economy as when you have a lighter load, but again, as long as it’s occasional it’s probably not going to be a huge issue.

I am leasing a 2016 Rav4 (gas model not hybrid). I would like to put a hitch on it IF it is capable of towing a small pontoon boat on trailer. Are you allowed to put a trailer hitch on a leased vehicle? Also, do you think the Rav4 has the ability to pull a small 14-16 foot pontoon boat on a trailer?

My Rav 4 all wheel drive has been pulling my wave riders scent 2011, the big one 5,500 pounds, small one 600 pounds, The dealer lied to me never realized I was pulling an over weight trailer. It Hauls ass passing cars at over 80 miles an hour. Its pulled it out of a dirt ramp easy. May have to upgrade to a highlander one day if it give me trouble. Will stay a bit hard on the brakes he he
